Practical Skills

Startups & Tech

Imagine what organizations would be like if they were only filled with people with practical skills.

How much do we waste by hiring analysts who can’t implement and managers who can’t do?

Yes, there will always be value in teaching, coaching, analyzing, and leading. But too often, organizations create roles solely based on those criteria without ensuring that those who fill them can actually do anything at all.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not suggesting that warehouse managers need to be able to lift 50 lbs any more than I’d suggest that professional basketball coaches need to be able to dunk.

But the ability to get scrappy, to roll up your sleeves and get shit done, is priceless.
